Sea Holly
Eryugium maritimum
This is a real garden curiosity and a magnificent shape addition to any garden.
It is a short lived perennial (two to three years) with spiny leaves and strange metallic mauve flowers.
Very easy to germinate and grow on, it is at it's best in full sun.
The leaves and young buds are quite edible and the roots, (dug in Autumn) make very tasty vegetables and can be sliced up and candied for sore throats.

Self Heal
Prunella vulgaris
As this herb grows so well from it's spreading root system and is so easy to strike from divisions we have never bothered to try it from seed.
Just as the Gotu Kola merrily spreads itself, the prunella silently fills those 'hard to grow anything in' areas under trees and in partial shade.
Sometimes twice a year it sends up tight little heads of purple flowers.
As a decoction we use it for high blood pressure, an unbalanced liver and a stimulant for the gall bladder.
Root Sets $5.50 plus $2.50 extra postage
We cannot supply rootlets
or divisions to Western Australia, Tasmania or Overseas.
Shepherd's Purse
Capsella bursa-pastoris
Mostly an annual and classified as a weed by many, we use it as a treatment for varicose veins.
We have noticed that it produces a marked drop in blood pressure and tastes dreadful.
Tiny herb really, and takes up no space at all in the garden.
Easy to grow and harvest, with no preference for sun or shade but does prefer winter outdoors.
Be careful not to plant too much at once.

Skullcap (Virginian)
Scutellaria lateriflora
Often listed as a perennial we treat it more as a constantly recurring annual, as it becomes almost dormant for most of the winter but sprouts forth again at the first hint of Spring.
The seeds, while difficult to harvest because the plant waits until you turn around to drop them, strike quickly and abundantly. We have found them best suited to direct sowing and do beautifully in a large pot as well as the garden.
We use the aerial parts by infusion as a sedative, or just a calming down after a stressful day.
It is often used for anxiety and nervous exhaustion as well as relief for sufferers of Rheumatism.
It is becoming widely used to help the withdrawal symptoms of anti depressants.

Snake Beans
Vigna unguiculata
Often called 'Yard long beans', you only need to pick a few to add to dinner for the whole family.
They strike quickly, (1-3 days) and grow just as fast. They are vigorous climbers and generous producers.
Warmer climates are able to support them all through the year, but they are not great with frost.
We usually get 100% viability from these seeds and we always provide more to ensure that you get a good showing.
They are great for the kids to plant as the seeds and plant are so quick to respond that they don't get bored waiting.
From a culinary point of view, treat as any normal bean and eat as fresh as possible.
Just be sure to give them something to climb on. Our trellis is 3M x3M and we fit about 20 plants at a time.
