Datura Stramonium
Thorn Apple

A curious little plant, this one. The scent of the flowers is unmistakable but hard to classify.

It is very easy to grow but seems to do best when left to seed itself in the garden rather than being raised in the nursery. Some growers claim that it will grow to 2m but we have never known it to grow beyond 80cm. Please note: ALL PARTS OF THE PLANT ARE TOXIC if ingested.

Daisey  (English)
Bellis perennis

You just can't do without this little wonder. The seeds propagate very easily.

Sown on the surface of the soil the tiny seeds are up and about in only three or four days.

As the plant is perennial it will continue to grow and spread all the while reseeding itself to continue your enjoyment. It works well as a groundcover but does not much like the very hot afternoon sun.

Dandilion
Taraxacum

People seem decidedly polarized regarding this happy little survivor. Our attitude depends on which part of the garden we are in at the time. In some areas it is a noxious weed but just around the corner, it's wonderful.

We use the leaves to pick up the zing in salads occasionally, ferment the flowers to create a real 'down home' wine, pickle the buds, because we can't seem to grow capers, and use the root in our 'Liver clean' formula.

It will grow well in pots and in some ways I think that it is best kept that way as the soil is generally more friable allowing the root to grow to generous size for harvesting.

Our major use of this herb is homeopathic. We only sell packets of 50 seeds as this is more than enough to start a very healthy crop.

Delphinium
Delphinium staphysagria

How could you possibly have a vegetable garden without this magnificent herb?

The entire plant is pungently aromatic, the fine, fern like foliage, beautiful, abundant white flowers, only to be followed by it's mildly narcotic seeds.

The greens can be used through most of the year, the seeds are great in pickles and curries, and the root can be used in bean dishes and soups.

Dill
Anethum graveolens

An aromatic annual with blue-green, feathery foliage often mistaken for fennel.

You can buy the dried seed at the supermarket, but until you have tried the immature green seed, directly from the plant you do not know what you have missed.

The seeds do aid digestion and settle flatulence and are a great addition if your diet is necessarily 'salt free'.

Dill is one of the very best examples of food being medicine.

Dragonfruit
Hylocereus undatus

This a climbing perennial that you need to grow somewhere where it can be as non cooperative as it needs to be.

It's triangular 'stem/foliage' tends to range anywhere it likes and defies control. All is forgiven though, when it flowers in the evenings and then produces it's wonderful fruit.

It will fruit several times a year. The fruit is great for breakfast as it is not too sweet but very refreshing.

Dyers Chamomile
Anthemis tinctoria

Upright, feathery, dark green foliage, with a generous display of yellow gold, daisy like flowers all through summer, it is distinctive because everyone is quite sure that they know it by sight.

As it's common name suggests, it was used extensively as a dye for colours ranging from yellow to khaki, depending on the mordant used to fix the dye.

It sows easily in place as long as the danger of frost has passed or is some way off. After a two years it gets a little 'leggy' and a bit unattractive but by that time it will have sown it's own seed and the patch just needs to be tidied up.

Medicinally, it does have some anti-spasmodic effect which can be useful during cramping menstruation.
