Herbs by Common or Folk name 'C'
California Poppy
Eschscholzia californica
We have it as an annual and a short lived perennial all in the same bed.
They choose for themselves.
We use aerial parts as they are quite useful for toothache, taking the edge of the discomfort.
The whole plant is often taken to help oxygenate the blood but we have no idea why the Hair Oil was so named.
This is the flower used in the Bach Flower tradition for emotional cleansing.

Catnip
Nepeta cataria
This lovely perennial is often cited as a boarder plant but our experience with it suggests that over one meter tall is not a boarder unless you have a very tall garden.
Used as a garnish in salads the leaves are rich in iron, calcium and changes the flavour of all your salads.
The tea was once used commonly before china tea became so popular.
Easy to strike, easy to grow and not at all demanding in the garden with the exception of spreading size.

Celery
Apium graveolens
This is a nice, clumping variety, that produces good, upright celery, that is delicious.
In cold climates it is best kept as an annual, but if you live where it is warm during winter, they can be kept as biennial.
The seed is very viable and quick to shoot. Two to three days at the most.
Because celery roots are very close to the surface you may need to water two or three times a day during the hottest parts of the year
Be careful not to plant too much at once.
50 + seeds $3.50
Chamomile
Matricaria recutita
The delicate foliage, and distinctive aroma of chamomile is a must for every herb garden.
The flowers share all of the properties of Chamaemelum nobile except for it's anti tumour properties.
It re-seeds itself generously once planted you are unlikely to need to source seeds again.
The tea made from infusing the dried or fresh flowers is, actually, quite a calming tea.
We were dubious at first! It seems to work on the digestive system by soothing nervous stress.
Chamomile is also the base for our "Snoreless' Homeopathic remedy using a 1C potency.
25+ seeds $3.50
Chinese Date
Ziziphus jujuba
Jujube, is one of those wonderful 'foods as medicine plants' with all the benefits of a tonic plant, without the nasty taste of many of the tonics and absolutely no dark side.
It is not a date but the dried fruit is certainly similar in appearance.
It is a deciduous tree and with its spines, leathery leaves and tiny yellow flowers it is not a visual pleasure in the garden, but then it fruits and it does not matter that it is not attractive any more.
The seeds have been removed from the case so that germination is quick and almost 90%
