Herbs by Common or Folk name 'C'
Calendula
Calendula officinalis
This delightful, sunny herb is classed as an annual but it self seeds so well that is just like having a perennial.
In the kitchen we use the petals in place of saffron with the rice.
It has been published historically that the leaves are useful in salads but we have not found it to our taste.
Externally, as a cream it is excellent for poorly healing wounds.
It is both antibacterial and anti fungal.
We also use it to treat stomach pain and as a liver stimulant.
It has no known side effects.

Casaba Melon
Cucumis melo
A lovely melon that is sweet to eat, looks great on a plate and is moderately easy to grow.
Lemon coloured rind with pale flesh, it's easy to cut and present and brings a summer aesthetic to salad. Not too sweet, it works well as a breakfast dish.
20 seeds $3.50
Caltrop
Tribulus Terrestris
So easy to grow that I understand why it has been declared a weed throughout the world.
They strike easily from seed but as they have 'staggered' germination you must be careful not to toss out the potting mix on the garden once you have transplanted a few, as some seed will germinate two years later.
While there seem to be no side effects at all from use of the herb because it stimulates the bodies natural hormone producing facility and does not provide hormone to the body, it should be used with common sense as it does demonstrate a noticeable effect on both men and women.
20 + seeds $3.50
Cantelope
Cucumis melo var. reticulatus
Rockmelons, related to watermelons, cucumbers squashes and pumpkins, are round with firm, scaly, greyish green to buff skin. with grooves and sutures, that orbit the rockmelon.
The have lovely, moist, sweet orange flesh. The flesh surrounds the seeds that are in the centre.
They are always eaten raw and fresh, although frozen can also be enjoyable.
They are a good source of Vitamin A and C. Easy to grow and easy to harvest.
20 seeds $3.50
Cape Gooseberry
Physalis alkekengi
A curious little solanaceae this one.
It only grows to around 80cm and, although it has woody stems its leaves are extremely tender and sensitive.
As only the fruit is used, there is only one harvest a year but as a fluid retention and kidney treatment, it is one of the best tasting remedies around.
It will grow throughout most of Australia and the seed strikes quickly and it grows strongly during winter and then bursts into flower and then fruit in late spring.
30 + Seeds $3.50
